There are usually vacancies for well qualified and highly motivated people who want to pursue a PhD in Software Engineering. Topics for these PhDs include but are not limited to:
Code analysis
Software testing
Software defect analysis and/or prediction
Code refactoring and bad smells
Program concurrency
Human factors relevant to software engineers (e.g. their motivation or how software engineers affect defects in code)
Cost/time estimation for software projects
These vacancies are for those in a position to self-fund three years of post graduate study.
